We are MHCLG

This role provides a rare opportunity to shape how the department understands, governs and manages its information assets. Government knowledge and information management profession -https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/civil-service-government-knowledge-information-management-profession

We are looking for an experienced KIM specialist with practical expertise in information asset management. The Information Asset Register is a core KIM governance tool. We are seeking someone who can transform it from an annual compliance exercise into a strategic management tool that supports assurance, risk management, accountability and decision-making across the department.

This role sits within the KIM function and will act as the department's lead for information asset management, working closely with Security, Data, Digital, Privacy and business teams while maintaining clear ownership of KIM responsibilities and governance boundaries. As the role will involve particularly close work with the Security team, regular travel to London will be essential.

What they’re looking for

  • You should have substantial experience in Knowledge and Information Management (KIM), records management or information management, with practical understanding of how information is managed in a large organisation.
  • Experience of information asset management, records management or digital continuity.
  • Understanding of the development of KIM policies, standards, guidance or assurance approaches.
  • Experience advising senior stakeholders on information ownership, accountability, retention, disposal, preservation, access, sharing or risk.
  • Ability to use information asset data to identify risks, trends and improvement priorities.
  • Understanding of public sector information governance, including transparency, accountability and Public Records Act obligations.
  • You should also be able to demonstrate experience of:
  • Operating, improving or developing an Information Asset Register or similar governance framework.
  • Advising and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Developing practical policies, standards and guidance.
  • Translating governance requirements into workable business processes.
  • Turning governance findings into clear recommendations and improvement actions.

Job description

Information Asset Register (IAR) Ownership and Operation:

Lead the department’s Information Asset Management Framework and strengthening consistent practice across business areas.

  • Work with the wider KIM team, including colleagues working on information sharing, digital information and records management colleagues to identify information assets, improve asset records, strengthen lifecycle management and ensure accountability for information throughout its lifecycle.
  • Use IAR intelligence to identify emerging risks, gaps and trends in ownership, retention, sensitivity, sharing, access, preservation and disposal, supporting governance, risk and assurance decision making.
  • Develop and maintain practical KIM policy, standards, guidance and assurance approaches for information asset management, supporting compliance with the Public Records Act and wider information governance obligations.
  • Collaborate with Information Rights, Data Protection, Security, Digital and business teams to align information asset management with related governance controls without duplicating specialist registers.
  • Produce insight and reports for senior leaders on the department’s information asset risk profile, including areas of weak ownership, poor lifecycle control or unmanaged business-critical information.
  • Champion the value of KIM by helping business areas manage information as a strategic asset that supports decision-making, transparency, accountability and public trust.
