Job summary
Find the Story Behind the Evidence; Shape Environmental Protection across Defence.
This is not a traditional environmental role. It is an opportunity for an environmental professional to apply their expertise in a different way - turning information into insight and intelligence into action. If you enjoy investigating complex issues, identifying the important details that others might miss, and using evidence to influence decision-making, this role offers a unique chance to make a difference across Defence.
As part of the Defence Environmental Protection Regulator (DEPR), you will be responsible for gathering, analysing and assessing environmental intelligence from across the Ministry of Defence. Using your environmental knowledge and professional judgement, you will identify emerging risks, trends, opportunities and areas of concern, turning diverse information sources into clear, evidence-based assessments. The role requires someone who can look beyond individual pieces of information to understand the wider picture, whilst also having the attention to detail needed to identify the critical insights and implications for environmental protection. You will work closely with colleagues across the Defence Safety Authority, building relationships, challenging assumptions constructively, and helping improve the quality and use of environmental information.
DEPR is part of the Defence Safety Authority (DSA), an independent authority within the Ministry of Defence. As Defence's environmental regulator, DEPR provides regulation, assurance and enforcement across all Defence activities, from Front Line Commands to enabling organisations such as the National Armaments Directorate. This role offers a rare opportunity to develop a Defence-wide understanding of environmental protection and directly support the evidence base that informs senior leaders responsible for environmental performance across Defence.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
We welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements, including part-time working and job share. This is a busy and high-profile role with responsibility for maintaining continuity across a broad portfolio of work, so any proposed arrangement will need to support effective delivery of business requirements. We encourage candidates to discuss their preferred working arrangements with us during the recruitment process so that we can explore options together.
What they’re looking for
- To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate that you:
- Have experience in an environmental role, either within Defence or in a comparable organisation, with transferable skills gained through areas such as regulation, policy, audit, assurance, compliance or environmental management.
- Are educated to at least Level 3 (e.g. A Levels) or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise and well-structured reports.
- Possess strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to identify trends, assess information and draw evidence-based conclusions.
- Can provide confident, well-reasoned advice and professional judgement to colleagues and senior leaders.
- Have effective stakeholder engagement and networking skills, with the ability to build productive working relationships across organisational boundaries.
- Can work independently, prioritise competing demands and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Have strong digital skills and are proficient in Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Hold membership of a relevant professional body (or are willing to work towards membership), such as ISEP, CIWM, CIWEM, CIEEM, IES or SocEnv, or another recognised professional body with a significant environmental specialism (e.g. IOSH, RSC, IMarEST or IET) and are committed to continuing professional development.
- It would be advantageous if you also have:
- A degree, HNC or equivalent qualification in an environmental or related discipline. However, substantial relevant experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.
- Chartered or Full Membership of a relevant professional body.
- Experience of developing solutions using Microsoft Power Apps.
- Familiarity with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools and their application within a professional environment, including developing effective prompts, refining outputs and applying critical judgement to assess accuracy, quality and suitability for use.
- An understanding of both the opportunities and limitations of GenAI, including the importance of human oversight, validation and assurance of AI-generated outputs.

The Civil Service embraces diversity and promotes equal opportunities. As such, we run a Disability Confident Scheme (DCS) for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria.
There may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all DCS candidates that meet the minimum criteria for the job. As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came into effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points-based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical. This role does not meet that category, and we will not sponsor a visa. It is therefore NOT open to applications from those who will require sponsorship under the points-based system.
Should you apply for this role and be found to require sponsorship, your application will be rejected and any provisional offer of employment withdrawn.
The Ministry of Defence requires all candidates who are successful at interview to declare any outside interests. These declarations will be discussed with successful candidates following the interview process and before a formal offer of employment is made, as some outside interests may not be compatible with MOD civilian roles. This will not, in the majority of cases, prevent employment in MOD, but it is a measure that must be taken to ensure that appropriate mitigations can be put in place to manage any potential, perceived or actual conflicts of interest from the first day of employment.
The Ministry of Defence adopts a zero-tolerance approach to unacceptable behaviours, which includes bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination, and victimisation. You will not be eligible and will not be considered for this post if you have been dismissed from a role for such unacceptable behaviours within the last five years. This will also apply if you resign or otherwise leave a role but, because of an adverse decision, would have been dismissed for gross misconduct had you continued in that employment. Pre-employment checks will be carried out.
Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
