Job summary
This recruitment campaign brings together a number of opportunities across the Crown Prosecution Service, including Administrative Officer, Casework Assistant, Advocacy Clerking Assistant, Victim Liaison Assistant and Fees Clerk roles. Within the Crown Prosecution Service, these roles are graded A2, which is equivalent to the Administrative Officer (AO) grade in the wider Civil Service. Whilst these roles are distinct, they share a common core of responsibilities, skills and behaviours.
The Crown Prosecution Service is responsible for delivering justice through the independent and effective prosecution of crime. As the principal prosecuting authority across England and Wales, our work is often complex and emotionally challenging. We are looking for individuals who are committed to public service, making a difference in people’s lives and delivering work to a high standard.
Whether supporting case progression, providing administrative support, communicating with victims, or processing financial information, all of the roles in this campaign play an important part in helping the Crown Prosecution Service operate effectively and maintain public confidence in our work.
You are asked to confirm your preferred role and location when completing your application. If you do not confirm your preference, you will be considered for the administrative officer role. If you are successful, you are placed on a list that reflects your preferred role and location. Offers are made from the relevant list in merit order, depending on business needs. If we do not have vacancies for your preferred role and location, you may be offered one of the other roles listed or an alternative location.
At A2/AO grade within the Crown Prosecution Service, you carry out a range of administrative, casework or support tasks that help our teams work effectively and deliver a high-quality service. Depending on the role, you may manage information, respond to enquiries, support case progression, communicate with victims or process financial records. In many cases, you are also the first point of contact for colleagues, external agencies or members of the public, so you must communicate clearly, professionally and within agreed timescales.
We are advertising two Administrative Officer – Operational Support Roles campaigns. You can only apply for one campaign - either Regional/Headquarters or Casework. If you submit applications for both, we accept the first application and reject the second.
What they’re looking for
- To be eligible to apply for this opportunity, you must:
- have excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills - including knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications
- have an interest in criminal law and public service
- be aged 18 or over before starting in this role.
- The start date is expected to be 8-12 weeks after the application deadline.
- Roles included in this campaign
- This campaign includes five distinct A2 roles. While all roles sit at the same grade and contribute to the work of the Crown Prosecution Service, the day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on the post. A summary of each role is set out below.
- Casework Assistant – You provide frontline casework support to prosecutors and legal teams by preparing cases for court, serving documents and maintaining case files for hearings in the magistrates’ and Crown Court. You respond professionally to enquiries and correspondence from criminal justice partners, victims and witnesses, record information accurately and complete administrative tasks to support the effective progression of cases.
- Administrative Officer – You provide vital administrative support to departments across the organisation, helping teams work effectively and efficiently. This includes managing and recording information accurately, monitoring correspondence, maintaining filing systems, responding to enquiries from the public and partner agencies, and supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of business areas across the Crown Prosecution Service.
- Advocacy Clerking Assistant – You provide administrative support to the Crown Advocacy Unit, helping to prepare and manage daily Crown Court lists and ensure cases are allocated and briefed to an advocate. Your role is focused on Crown Court work and involves regular liaison communication by phone and email with Crown Advocates, paralegals, chambers and other stakeholders to help secure appropriate advocacy cover. You maintain diary and database records, manage inbox activity, produce standard correspondence and support the smooth running of the unit.
- Victim Liaison Assistant – You are a key point of contact for victims of crime, ensuring they receive clear, timely and empathetic communication about their case. You draft correspondence in plain English, respond to enquiries, complaints and Victims’ Right to Review requests, arrange meetings, manage a varied caseload and work closely with prosecutors, Witness Care Units and external agencies to ensure victims are informed and supported throughout the prosecution process.
- Fees Clerk – You accurately process fee claims and invoices in line with deadlines, service standards and relevant guidance. You check and manage financial information, produce reports, investigate discrepancies, maintain accurate records of expenditure and payments, and handle enquiries while building effective working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- Casework divisions
- Central casework divisions in the Crown Prosecution Service deal with some of the most complex criminal cases we prosecute. Working closely with specialist investigators across the criminal justice system, these divisions prosecute offences including organised crime, fraud, terrorism, corporate manslaughter and economic crime on an international scale.
- Serious Economic, Organised Crime and International Directorate Regional Wales Division - reserve list only
- Proceeds of Crime - reserve list only
- Special Crime and Counter Terrorism - reserve list only
- You may be appointed to either a regional team or headquarters, depending on the role and location you are offered. Offers will be made from the merit list for your preferred role and first-choice location, in merit order, and will depend on available vacancies and business need. If you are offered a post, you may be placed in any suitable team within that role and location.
