Senior Analyst - Whole Market Conduct

We’re looking for a Senior Analyst to join us and bring powerful analytical insight to some of the most complex issues affecting wholesale energy markets.

We’re offering a permanent, full-time role with the chance to work at the heart of wholesale market regulation and make a meaningful impact on how these vital markets operate. You’ll join our Wholesale Market Conduct team, helping promote integrity and transparency across Britain’s gas and electricity markets. Working across a varied and complex landscape, you’ll contribute to evidence-led regulation that ultimately delivers better outcomes for consumers.

This is an exciting chance to combine your understanding of wholesale markets with advanced analytical expertise, working with unique and complex datasets covering trading activity and the physical characteristics of energy producers. You’ll collaborate across Ofgem and engage with major organisations across the UK and European energy landscape, gaining significant exposure while helping strengthen our response to risks within wholesale markets.

We’re looking for someone with a strong understanding of wholesale energy markets or trading, combined with excellent analytical and quantitative capabilities and the ability to draw robust conclusions from complex evidence. You’ll also bring experience navigating complex regulatory frameworks, excellent communication skills and the technical capabilities to work effectively with large datasets.

Key responsibilities:

• Leading on compliance or enforcement activity in relation to wholesale market conduct issues by producing high quality, timely, and robust analysis and reports and by engaging with market participants and market operators on conduct issues.
• Build capability in the team by improving the team’s analytical tools and processes for proactive monitoring of large and complex wholesale transaction datasets for potential regulation breaches.
• Making evidence-based recommendations: identifying and escalating key issues as well as assisting in the management of risk.
• Contributing to learning and development of colleagues, by mentoring and developing team learning materials.
• Collaborating across Ofgem teams and with external stakeholders on addressing wholesale markets risks and issues.

• Wholesale Market Oversight and International portfolio, including the team providing insights on wholesale gas and electricity markets developments
• Wholesale market policy teams
• Legal teams

External:

• National Energy System Operator (NESO)
• Energy brokers and exchanges
• Electricity generators, gas shippers and wholesale market participants
• UK and EU institutional stakeholders such as DESNZ, the FCA, ACER and other National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs).
