Job description
The UK’s trading and economic relationship with the EU remains one of the UK’s most important international relationships, and the agreements facilitating this are central to the UK’s economic prosperity.
This post sits in the branch responsible for the UK’s financial relationship with the EU. This role provides policy oversight regarding two aspects the UK’s financial relationship with the European Union: the participation of the UK in EU programmes under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) and fulfilling the UK’s financial obligations through the EU Financial Settlement under the Withdrawal Agreement.
The role holder will be expected to manage their time between working on issues related to the Withdrawal Agreement and issues related to the TCA. The team operates a matrix management system and the role holder will report to one Range E (G7) on Withdrawal Agreement matters and one Range E (G7) on TCA matters, who will also be their line manager.
Specific responsibilities are likely to depend on ongoing developments in the UK-EU economic and financial relationship, as well as the evolution of the wider team, but key accountabilities include:
- Support the delivery of formal international EU-UK meetings on the Financial Settlement and UK participation in EU programmes
- Work across government to develop the UK’s strategy with regards to future UK participation in EU programmes
- Lead HMT’s oversight of UK participation in the EU space programme
- Manage correspondence on the Financial Settlement and UK participation in EU programmes
- Work on assurance activities for the EU Financial Settlement Invoices
- Manage the advice process around the payment of EU Financial Settlement Invoices

Reserve Lists
You will be placed on a reserve list if your application is successful, but we cannot offer you a role immediately. Internal Fraud Database Check

National Security Vetting
Everyone working with government assets must complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks. Additionally, successful candidates will be subject to National Security Vetting. The level of security vetting required for this role is Security Check (SC).
To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out, applicants will need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 out of the past 5 years. You will be asked to provide residency information within your application form, and eligibility for national security vetting will be checked once the advert closing date has passed. In certain circumstances, for example if you have been working abroad on a government posting, a lack of residency would not be a bar to security clearance however the Department will need to consider eligibility on a case-by-case basis once the advert closing date has passed.
