Job Role: Learning and Skills Coach (Band 4) Vacancy Overview
London Probation is establishing an ambitious London Regional Training and Skills Development Department to transform how staff are supported, developed and empowered across the region. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new and high‑profile initiative focused on building confidence, capability and consistency in probation practice, and making a tangible difference to probation staff, stakeholders, and people on probation.
The Learning and Skills Coach role sits within the department and focuses on supporting staff to embed learning into day‑to‑day practice. Coaches will work directly with learners and line managers to build confidence, capability and consistency, in line with the agreed regional model.
The role is externally advertised and assessed under the Civil Service Success Profiles framework.
Role Summary
As a Learning and Skills Coach, you will deliver high‑quality coaching, learning and practice‑support activities, including workshops and action-learning sets to probation practitioners across London. You will support learners to consolidate skills, apply learning to their caseloads and develop confidence in their professional role.
You will work as part of a structured coaching and training team, contributing to classroom sessions, action learning sets and practice-based support, while maintaining clear records and contributing to quality assurance processes.
Regular travel across the London Region will be required.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
- Deliver structured coaching, mentoring and learning activities in line with the agreed regional model.
- Deliver classroom training, workshops and action learning sets.
- Work closely with line managers and Band 5 managers to support learner progress and consolidation of skills.
- Maintain accurate records of learning activity and contribute to evaluation and feedback processes.
- Identify emerging learning needs, risks or concerns and escalate appropriately.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive and professional learning environment.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
You will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience working within probation, social care, mental health or related public services.
- Experience of supporting learning or development in an operational or professional environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and provide constructive feedback.
- An understanding of how learning is applied and sustained in practice and experience of coaching or mentoring staff.
- The ability to work within clear structure, guidance and quality standards.
- Understanding and experience of reflective practice and action-learning approaches
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Willingness to complete the learning necessary to gain a formal coaching qualification, if not already achieved

- Location: London Region (regular travel required)
