Justice AI Academy Creative Intern

About the role

The Justice AI Academy gives emerging talent the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on high-impact AI projects across the justice system.

As our Creative Intern, you will work alongside engagement, adoption, product and engineering teams to help communicate the work of the Justice AI Unit in clear, creative and accessible ways.

This is a hands-on development role. You will take ownership of defined pieces of work, while receiving mentoring and support from experienced colleagues. You will not be responsible for communications strategy, line management or senior stakeholder management.

The role supports the ambitions of the AI Action Plan for Justice by helping people understand and engage with AI, supporting responsible adoption and building capability for the future.

What you will do

You will:

• create and edit engaging written, visual, photo and video content;
• create and publish accessible social media and digital content;
• turn complex AI topics into clear and engaging communications for different audiences;
• support communications for AI and productivity-tool roll-outs;
• support events, campaigns and communities across MoJ and the wider Civil Service;
• maintain website and online content;
• use engagement and feedback to improve communications;
• explore responsible use of AI tools for creative ideation and production; and
• take ownership of defined pieces of work from brief through to delivery, seeking support and approval where appropriate.

Who we are looking for

This opportunity would be particularly well suited to a university student or recent graduate studying communications, journalism, media, marketing, design, film, photography, creative industries or a related subject.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

• strong written and visual communication skills;
• creativity and good judgement;
• an ability to make complex information accessible and engaging;
• good organisation and the ability to deliver to deadlines;
• confidence taking ownership of their own work;
• a proactive and collaborative approach; and
• curiosity about AI, technology and public services.

Formal professional experience is not essential. Relevant experience could come from your studies, student societies, volunteering, placements, freelance work, social media or personal creative projects.

What you will get from the Academy

During the six-month internship you will receive hands-on experience, mentoring and structured development, while working alongside colleagues across AI, product, engineering, adoption and engagement.

You will have the opportunity to develop your creative and AI skills, build a network across government and contribute to the responsible adoption of AI across justice.

Working pattern

The role can be undertaken full-time or part-time, including alongside university study where an appropriate working pattern can be agreed.

Regular attendance at our London office will be required to work with the team, capture content, support events and benefit from hands-on mentoring and development.

Interview

The recruitment process has two stages.

Stage one – Technical assessment (online)

Candidates who are successful at sift will be invited to a 30-minute presentation based technical assessment.

The exercise will be shared 7 days before the interview. The presentation will be based on a creative communications brief relevant to the work of the Justice AI Unit. We will assess your ideas, understanding of the audience, creative judgement and ability to communicate clearly rather than the professional polish of the presentation.

Stage two – Behaviour & Strengths interview (face to face)

A panel interview lasting up to 45 minutes, assessing you against two Civil Service strengths and the following Civil Service behaviours at HEO level:

• Communicating and Influencing
• Delivering at Pace
• Working Together
