Home Office Digital designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. An Infrastructure Engineer in Shared Application Support (SAS) Digital Support designs, builds, supports, and improves IT infrastructure across cloud and on-premises environments. The role ensures government services remain secure, resilient, and compliant with government standards.

Your work directly supports critical public services used by millions of citizens. You'll help ensure government systems remain secure, reliable, and available when people need them most.

  • You’ll have a demonstrable passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following skills or some experience in:
  • Demonstrable experience delivering IT services, support, or technical solutions in a professional environment, with the ability to apply relevant knowledge and skills effectively.
  • A good understanding of ITIL v4 guidelines and the ability to articulate and implement them in an IT support role.
  • Strong understanding of core technical concepts related to your role and ability to build solutions.
  • Dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution.

Job description

An Infrastructure Engineer supports and maintains infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy and Home Office strategy.

You will work in a team of Infrastructure Engineers making sure services are delivered and supported as required. You work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.

Key responsibilities

  • building, configuring, transitioning, administering and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source packages and solutions
  • resolving technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements taking accountability for actions taken and decisions made
  • identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users
  • investigating faults in systems, processes and services, and advise on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures
  • working collaboratively to ensure that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service
  • using logical designs created by technical architects and required standards, methods and tools (including prototyping tools where appropriate) to build infrastructure solutions

Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance in line with Home Office policy.

Working Pattern

This role is available on a full-time basis with the option of compressed hours working. This role is also suitable for part-time working hours, with a minimum requirement to work 3 days / 22.2 hours per week due to business requirements.

The Personal Statement should be aligned to and demonstrate how you meet the skills and experience set out in the essential criteria, detailed in the job description.

Sift – commencing 24th September 2026

The sift will be held on the Personal Statement, CV, and Technical Skills Incident Management (USUP) - Level 2, IT Infrastructure (ITOP) – Level 2 and Systems Design (DESN) - Level 3, as listed in the advert.

Should a high volume of applications be received, an initial sift will be conducted on the Personal Statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will then be progressed to a full sift that will consist of all the remaining elements submitted (CV, Technical Skills Incident Management (USUP) - Level 2, IT Infrastructure (ITOP) – Level 2 and Systems Design (DESN) - Level 3). Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the initial sift will not have their remaining submitted elements scored and will only receive a sift score for that assessed at the initial sift.

Interview – commencing 15th October 2026

If you are successful at sift stage, you will be invited to an interview that will be Technical Skills based questions. All Technical skills listed in the selection process will be scored at the interview.

The interview will take place on MS Teams.
